Extreme rides 2014

Extreme Rides 2014

SCREAM
Heide Park
Soltau, Germany

Halfway along the Hamburg-Hannover Autobahn you'll find the world's tallest drop tower, Scream. With a height of 103 metres to the pinnacle, try to look out over the flowerbeds and trees before you plummet to the ground in 2.4 seconds

COLOSSUS
Thorpe Park
Chertsey, Surrey, UK

Built in 2002, this British roller coaster contains ten inversions in one ride, which is a world record. Some of the turns are known as the double corkscrew, the heart-line roll and the cobra roll.

TOWER OF TERROR II
Dreamworld
Gold Coast, Australia

Re-done in September 2010 to make it faster and scarier, the Tower of Terror II is a steel shuttle roller coaster. Riders are launched along a 206 metre tunnel, hitting 160.9 km/h in 7 seconds, before dangling at the top for a little while and plummeting face first back to the ground.

INSANITY
Stratosphere Hotel and Casino
Las Vegas, USA

Reaching out 20 metres over Las Vegas's famous Strip is the ride known as Insanity - possibly because you have to be insane to go on it. At the top of the Stratosphere tower with a 275 metre drop below, this ride angles you at 70 degrees and spins you round

HARRY POTTER AND THE FORBIDDEN JOURNEY
Islands of Adventure, Universal Orlando
Orlando, Florida, USA

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the seventh island on Universal's Islands of Adventure, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is the ride that makes the cut - it epitomises all the storytelling and technology-based work Universal have been developing over the last few decades. The ride utilises KUKA robocoaster technology, which allows the seats to pivot while being held above the track by a robotic arm, while you experience all the frights and delights of the wizarding world thanks to 3D effects.

TORNADO
Wet 'n' Wild
Gold Coast, Australia

The Tornado ride blasts you down a 40 metre long tunnel into the middle of a tornado-like storm, made all the more terrifying because it's all conducted in water. But never fear, you won't be alone - the ride takes 4 people at a time on nothing more than a glorified floaty

PEPSI MAX BIG ONE
Pleasure Beach
Blackpool England

Pleasure Beach's biggest, fastest, scariest roller coaster also happens to be one of Europe's tallest. Standing at 72 metres, the ride lasts for three long, stomach churning minutes.

X2
Magic Mountain Adventure Park
Valencia, California, USA

America's X2 roller coaster differs from others because, thanks to a special rack and pinion wheel, the seats have the ability to rotate 360 degrees mid-ride. You'll find yourself head first, face down, looking at the drop beneath you right when you least expect it.

STEEL DRAGON 2000
Nagashima Spa Land Amusement Park
Nagashima, Japan

The Steel Dragon 2000 in Nagashima, Japan, is the world's longest rollercoaster at 2500 meters, with three hills and two tunnels along the way. It also reaches speeds of over 150 kilometres per hour.

TONNERRE DE ZEUS
Parc Asterix
Paris, France

Paris is home to the longest wooden roller coaster in Europe, which is also known as the Thunder of Zeuss. Located in the popular Asterix Park (based on the comic book character), Thunder of Zeuss takes you along 1.2 kilometres of windy track and past a statue of Zeuss himself in just 90 seconds. Make sure you take the time to explore the rest of the park while you're there, with the park's sections divided by country and many more cleverly conceptualised rides

SKYCYCLE
Washuzan Highland Park
Okayama, Japan

For the extreme thrill seeker, Japan's Skycycle is for you. A metal structure erected 45 feet in the air, you literally cycle your way through the trees, looking over the city, powered only by your own two feet. Not for the faint hearted.

MISSION: SPACE EPCOT
Walt Disney World
Florida, USA

The Mission: SPACE attraction at Walt Disney World Florida is a motion simulator thrill ride, replicating space travel in an incredibly accurate way. This ride, which takes you to Mars, was widely touted as being ground-breaking when it first opened in 2003.

See-through style has stormed the fashion scene this season with transparent detailing on clothing and accessories. These milky blue shades are an easy way to wear the trend. The rounded-off square frames make them an ideal fit for most face shapes.

 Dolce & Gabbana:

The inspiration for Dolce & Gabbana’s collection this season was summers spent at the seaside in Sicily, for which a great pair of sunglasses would surely be a necessity. These colourful numbers in an oversized style, are just the thing to add a dose of holiday spirit to any look.

 Zara:

Black and white has been a runaway trend for spring/summer 2013. These shades are a sweet way to get the look; and this colour combination will outlast seasonal trends – an enduring classic for years to come

5 video game trends expected at E3

5 video game trends expected at E3:

LOS ANGELES — With the launch of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U in the video game industry's rearview mirror, the spotlight at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles is expected to shift back to games. From online-only titles to virtual reality experiences, about 200 exhibitors will hype their latest software in hopes of becoming The Next Big Thing. A sampling:
NEW TRICKS: Following the dawn of the new console generation, several publishers will use this year's E3 to push potential new franchises, such as Bungie's sci-fi shooter "Destiny," Turtle Rock Studios' monster battle "Evolve," Insomniac Games' cartoony shoot-'em-up "Sunset Overdrive" and Ubisoft Massive's terrorist thriller "Tom Clancy's The Division."

SAYING SORRY: A few apologies might be issued to E3 crowds, like Microsoft for backtracking on required features for the Xbox One, Electronic Arts for botching last year's "Battlefield 4" launch, Nintendo for again dialing back its E3 presence after stumbling with the Wii U and far too many publishers to name here for delaying titles originally set for release this year to 2015.

REALITY CHECK: The prospect of virtual reality in the living room probably isn't quite ready for prime time, but that won't stop VR from being buzzed about across the Los Angeles Convention Center this week. A few developers, including "Words With Friends" co-creator Paul Bettner, will be showing off games created for the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus headsets.

RETURN OF THE JEDI: EA, which announced an exclusive deal last year with Disney to produce "Star Wars" games for the next 10 years, will detail DICE's intergalactic adventure "Star Wars: Battlefront" during its E3 presentation on Monday, and the company might tease other "Star Wars" games, including one that's currently being crafted by its Visceral Games studio

Footwear That Will Charge Your Phone As You Walk

Teen Invents Footwear That Will Charge Your Phone As You Walk:

Angelo Casimiro is only 15, but he just invented electricity-generating footwear—as you walk or run about, your shoes will generate power that can be used to charge your phone or any small battery-powered device.
The footwear was Casimiro's entry to Google's Science Fair this year.
"Electricity is generated using a an insole generator that is made out of two pairs of physio-electric discs, which produce energy when the crystal bend inward,"explains Casimiro in his entry video. The generator is soldered to the battery of a power bank, which can then be used to plug in any device through a USB connection.
Don't expect to charge up your iPhone on your morning jog. In initial tests, Casimiro's device was able to charge a phone for about 10 minutes of  use after playing 2 hours of basketball. But hey, it's a start.

REVIEW: Samsung's Latest Galaxy Phone Is Built Like A Tank (T)

REVIEW: Samsung's Latest Galaxy Phone Is Built Like A Tank (T)

You carry your smartphone with you just about everywhere, so there's a decent expectation over its two-year life that you'll drop it. Get it wet. Dribble some food on it.
Samsung's answer to those everyday problems is the Galaxy S5 Active, a new smartphone that takes the company's flagship Galaxy S5 phone and wraps it in a sturdy shell built to withstand drops, dings, spills, and scratches. It's also water resistant and dustproof, meaning you can dunk it in shallow water for a few minutes and everything will still work perfectly.
The Galaxy S5 Active is only available on AT&T and costs $200 with a two-year contract. (The same price as the regular Galaxy S5.)
I've been using the Galaxy S5 Active for a few days. It works as advertised, but compromises a lot to bring you extra durability, especially design.
Here's a quick review The Galaxy S5 Active is almost the same phone as the regular Galaxy S5. The only thing it's really missing is the fingerprint sensor that can unlock the phone without a password. (That's probably a good thing, since Samsung's fingerprint sensor doesn't work very well.)
The Active has a sharp 5.1-inch screen, a heart rate monitor on the back, and most of the software extras Samsung added to Android in the standard Galaxy S5.
It's the outside that changed the most. The Active is built like a tank — complete with faux screws and plastic panels designed to look like metal plating. It comes in a few color options, including a very tacky camo green.
All that extra bulk is designed to increase the durability of the Galaxy S5 Active. It's also dust resistant and water resistant. You can dunk it in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes and it'll still work.

Is It Any Good?

Like I said above, the Active is basically the same phone as the regular Galaxy S5, so I won't waste time going over all the features Samsung introduced with that phone in April. This time it's all about the design.
The Active is indeed very durable, but it doesn't add much. In fact, I think the design is tacky and  ugly, as if Samsung's designers took the mandate to build a durable phone a little too literally and made this thing look like something an Army sergeant would want in the field of battle.
Plus, Samsung's regular Galaxy S5 is already water and dust resistant and its plastic body doesn't attract dings and scratches like metal phones do. There's not much of a reason to choose the Active over the standard model.

Conclusion

If you like Samsung phones, I think you're better off with the regular Galaxy S5. It's slimmer and more attractive, and it already has just about all the benefits of the Active, including water resistance.
I think this is an aesthetic choice. If you want a phone that feels big, thick, bulky, and substantial, go with the Galaxy S5 Active. If you want your phone to look good, go with the standard model.

Paraplegic in 'Iron Man' bodysuit to open World Cup

Paraplegic in 'Iron Man' bodysuit to open World Cup:

The first kick at the World Cup opening ceremony will be made by a paraplegic wearing an Iron Man-like robotic bodysuit controlled by signals from the brain.Brazilian doctor Miguel Nicolelis led a team of 156 scientists from around the world to create the futuristic exoskeleton, which was designed to enable paralysis victims to walk.At the World Cup opening ceremony Thursday in Sao Paulo, a paraplegic whose identity has been kept secret will leave behind his or her wheelchair to take to the pitch in the suit and give the tournament's first kick.

Electronic circuits in the device's "feet" will send a return signal to the user via an artificial skin worn on the arm, conveying the sensation of movement and contact.
"It's the first time an exoskeleton has been controlled by brain activity and offered feedback to the patients," Nicolelis, a neuroscientist at Duke University, told AFP.
"Doing a demonstration in a stadium is something very much outside our routine in robotics. It's never been done before."His voice contains a mix of exhaustion and excitement, the result of 30 years' work, more than 200 scientific papers and countless clinical tests that are nearing a spectacular summit.
Nicolelis started down this path in 1984 when he wrote his doctoral thesis on neural connections in muscular control. He said the idea for the suit came to him in 2002, when scientists were just beginning to explore robotic exoskeletons.

"In 2009, after we learned Brazil was hosting the World Cup, they asked me for ideas to show Brazil in a different way than the world usually sees it. That's when I suggested doing a scientific demonstration to teach people that Brazil is investing and has human potential to do things beyond football," he said.
Nicolelis said he and a team of some 40 people have barely left the lab since March, when they arrived in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city and economic hub, to finalize preparations.

But it's been rewarding, too, he said, recalling the moment on April 24 when a paralyzed user first took steps in the exoskeleton. They named the device the BRA-Santos Dumont, a combination of the three-letter sporting code for Brazil and Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviator, inventor and bon vivant who once
demonstrated controllable flight was possible by flying his dirigible around the Eiffel Tower.
Scientific controversy

Some scientists have criticized Nicolelis for ditching academic publications in favor of mass media -- he posts research updates on Facebook -- and the anonymity of the lab for the lights of the World Cup stage.
Critics have also questioned the practicality of his research and accused him of hogging an unfair share of the Brazilian government's research budget. Nicolelis rejects that criticism.

"The funding is the same with or without the World Cup. We've received $14 million from the Brazilian government over the last two years. That's approximately four or five times less than what the United States government invests in a mechanical arm," he said.
"I don't see anything wrong with demonstrating a technology for the whole world that has a humanitarian objective and was paid for by civil society," he added.

More than 65,000 people will be in Sao Paulo's Corinthians Arena to watch the BRA-Santos Dumont's first steps in public before Brazil play Croatia in the opening match. Around a billion are expected to watch on TV.

Haylie Duff talks about her new show

Haylie Duff talks about her new show:

MIAMI — Haylie Duff is putting her actress / singer hat on the back burner for her new docuseries, "Real Girl's Kitchen," premiering on the Cooking Channel at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday.
"Keeping Up with the Duffs" this is not. Though we may see snippets of her family, which includes famous younger sister Hilary Duff, popular namesake blog and cookbook, "Real Girl's Kitchen." So think recipes (e.g., watermelon gazpacho, mozzarella bites and tuna creme fraiche), not drama.
We spoke to the 29-year-old former "7th Heaven" star, who recently got engaged to T-shirt designer Matt Rosenberg. The couple split their time between New York and Los Angeles.
Q. Have you always been into cooking?
A. Yes! I'm one of those people who always has food shows on. I also love cookbooks. I can sit down and literally read one cover to cover. My mom and my grandmother have shared recipes with me, and even my dad, who is great on the grill, gave me good tips. We have him on the barbecue episode. I started "Real Girl's Kitchen" as a blog about three years ago, and it's grown in a crazy, organic way. It's such a dream realized for me to be on the Cooking Channel.
Q. What is your style? How often do you cook?
A. I love comfort food, but nothing tastes better to me than flavors of the season. In Los Angeles, we're a little spoiled with all the farmers' markets. So I'm on the healthy side, with definitely some cheat stuff thrown in. I try to find a balance between the two. My schedule is not normal. If it were, I'd be planning out meals Monday through Friday. I try to cook a little bit every day. It's what I love. It's part of me. Some of my signature dishes and what my family most often requests on a regular basis are buffalo dip, kale salad with tahini dressing and lemon caper chicken.
Q. How do you stay trim with all this food around?
A. I am dieting right now. We're from Texas, we're hunters, meat eaters. The best thing for me is protein. I try to not always make meals about meats. I'll often thrown in quinoa and nuts. But truthfully, when I'm watching my weight, it's hard to cut out bread and definitely no fun. But give me a good piece of chicken or sausage, and I'm cool.
