These Revolutionary Optics Could Make Battlefield Lasers a Reality

These Revolutionary Optics Could Make Battlefield Lasers a Reality:
Weapons that shoot light rather than bullets are quickly becoming a reality, however their huge bulk and even larger energy consumption still demand that they be mounted on vehicles such as battleships and tractor trailers. But thanks to this newly developed optics system from the US Army Research Lab, tomorrow's battlefields could soon be crowded with light guns.
The 21-element optical phased array, known as the Adaptive Phase Coherent Fiber Laser Array system, has been in development for more than a decade as part of DARPA's Excalibur program, which aims to deploy scalable laser weapons to the battlefield using coherent optical phased array technology. This technology uses a high-speed control algorithm called "Stochastic Parallel Gradient Descent," which allows multiple smaller apertures to generate laser beams, then combine them into a larger, more powerful unified beam like the one on the Death Star that destroyed Alderaan.
And thanks to the ARL's work, these beams will be far less subject to physical turbulence and atmospheric interference than the current generation of weapons. What's more, it should also shrink the size, weight, and cost of future weapons systems without reducing their power. This could eventually mean ray guns, or at least 100 KW systems far smaller and lighter than the current HEL MD. It also could mean a new class of laser-based battlefield communications, a new means of missile and drone defense for ground troops, or new weapons for our own UAS fleet. The possibilities are endless.

"Hitchhiking robot will charm its way across Canada"
The intrepid machine is currently under construction, but Smith expects the finished product to look like it was cobbled from "odds and ends" such as pool noodles and Wellington boots. The hitchBOT team is hoping its creation can answer a question about human kindness. "Usually, we are concerned whether we can trust robots, " says Zeller in a statement. "But this project takes it the other way around and asks: can robots trust human beings?" HitchBOT's journey begins on July 27th, and will be chronicled on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter

Samsung Considers Buying the Company that Powers Siri's Voice Recognition:
Samsung has been exploring an acquisition of Nuance Communications, the back end provider for Siri's speech recognition system. Nuance also makes Dragon speech recognition software, that can be found on many other devices. Samsung is up against other potential buyers, including venture capital groups, though it appears talks are still in the early stages.
While potential prices have not yet been publicly disclosed, Nuance did close higher on Monday evening, at $18.76 per share.
When Apple first began using Nuance for Siri, there was speculation that they would acquire the speech recognition company. Nuance also owns Swype, a keyboard replacement which was made popular on Android devices, and at WWDC earlier this month, Apple confirmed that third party keyboards like Swype can be incorporated into iOS 8. With the improvements made to Siri for the next release, Apple has clearly been hard at work integrating and perfecting Nuance technology.
In the latest leak of potential buyers, Apple was not listed. In the event Nuance goes to Samsung, Apple's most aggressive competitor, Apple would likely re-engineer Siri without Nuance. Apple certainly has the capital to outbid Samsung if it comes to this, though they may just be fundamentally uninterested in acquiring the company.
On the other hand, Apple ignoring this sale and looking elsewhere for their tech, would be in line with their past actions. Outside of Beats, Apple generally purchases companies in the millions — not billions — which it can absorb quietly.
Taylor Swift has been writing comments all over Instagram

Taylor Swift has been writing comments all over Instagram:
It’s the modern-day version of a fan letter — celebrities these days are inundated with “please follow” requests on Twitter, as well as pleas to reply to fans on social media. Sometimes, fans are rewarded for effort: Stars will occasionally retweet or “favorite” a tweet, or even “like” a Facebook photo. But these celebs have millions of followers, so it’s very rare.
That’s why it’s become such a big deal when, over the last few months, pop superstar Taylor Swift has gone above and beyond: She’s started writing some very personal, inspiring, sometimes hilarious comments in response to fans that tag her in photos on Instagram.
Almost immediately, people started posting screen grabs across Twitter and Tumblr to prove that Swift wrote back to them.
We’ll give Swift credit — it’s a smart move to further endear yourself to your fans, and her fanbase is one that we didn’t think could be any more obsessed with their idol. For someone who gets tagged in thousands of random photos, she responds to posts of all types. (Her rep confirmed to us that she does in fact run her own Instagram account.)
Sometimes her comments are brief; if someone tags her in a photo that explains their level of Swift devotion, she will reply to thank them: “Thank you so much for being at my show! I can’t believe you chose me over senior prom!” Or if the fan posts a photo from your concert: “Thanks for spending so much time making that poster!!! And it was so cool that you just called me your hero.”
Other times she simply comments on a funny picture, such as when someone Instagrams a paparazzi photo of Swift in a grocery store: “Thanks so much for this note! And for posting a picture that depicts a moment of intense contemplation for me: which kind of lettuce to buy.” Or when a fan blatantly poses with their clearly unimpressed dog named Finnick to get Swift’s attention, knowing Swift loves animals, she’ll take the bait and respond: “HAHA Finnick is all ‘CAN YOU NOT’ right now.”
Then there are much longer, more emotional posts, usually when a fan describes that Swift’s music is the only thing getting them through the day. Swift offers them big sisterly advice: “You’re sensitive and that’s a good thing, but I hope you will learn to block out the words that just devastate you.”
She also reflects on her own experiences, hinting at her own feelings of insecurity that comes with the often-negative scrutiny of worldwide fame. If someone says when they listen to her songs they can forget about bullies, she’ll write: “We all go through life with a list of names we’ve been called (I have a feeling mine is a little longer than yours ;)…it doesn’t mean we have to let those terrible names define us in any way, you lovely BEAUTIFUL girl.”

5 beauty tips for softer hands:
If you work with your hands a lot, you will need to occasionally soak, exfoliate and moisturize them once in awhile. As we age, our skin retains less moisture. For young hands, why not start taking care of them now? Here are five simple ways to maintain, soft, youthful looking hands.
Tip #1 - When washing your hands remember that you may be stripping the skin of essential oils each time, try to wash just the palms of your hands.
Tip #2 – Soak your hands in raw unprocessed oatmeal. Blend the oatmeal into a powder and place into a large bowl. Dip both hands into the oatmeal, rubbing it all over the hands. This will gently exfoliate the hands. Afterwards, simply rinse with cool water, pat dry and moisturize.
Tip #3 – Dermatologists recommend doubling up when moisturizing your hands. First do one layer, wait a few minutes for the moisturizer to set before applying the second layer.
Tip #4 - “Skin moisturizes itself from the inside out,” .“If there’s moisture in the air, not as much would be drawn out through the skin. Therefore, it’s a good idea to use a home humidifier.”
Tip #5 - Avoid soaping. “Because chapped hands occur when oil is taken from the skin, you should not use a terribly harsh or alkaline soap. You’re better off with a mild soap, preferably with a little cold cream in it

Apps let parents control children’s usage of electronic devices

Apps let parents control children’s usage of electronic devices:
TORONTO - Parents struggling to get their children away from smartphones and tablets for meals, homework, exercise and other activities can arm themselves with new apps to remotely block access to the devices.
Usage of smartphones and tablets among children has tripled since 2011, according to Common Sense Media, a San Francisco based non-profit that studies the effects of media and technology on young users.
A new app called Dinner Time Parental Control, for iPhone or Android smartphones, enables parents to restrict when children can use their smartphones and tablets.
“The price of entry level smartphones and tablets have come down a lot, and as a result, more and more kids have their own individual devices,” said Richard Sah, co-founder of Dinner Time, based in San Mateo, California.
With the free app, parents can pause activity on a child’s Android smartphone or tablet so that they can focus on things like homework, exercise and family time. Once a device has been paused, all functions on their device are blocked, including the ability to text and play with apps.
To use the app, parents install it on the child’s device and enter in their phone number to link the two devices. Parents can then set specific break times, ranging from 30 minutes to three hours, when the device will be locked. A countdown screen displayed on the child's device shows when they can use it again.
Sah said he was inspired to develop the app by the tradition of family dinners, which he thinks is being lost in the age of technology.
“Dinner time brings families together for quality time and to have lots of different conversations"
We want people to come together for engaging conversations, rather than be distracted by a tablet,” he said.
DinnerTime Plus, another free app from the company, lets parents manage the apps their children use and to views the apps they are using in real time.
Parents can also purchase detailed reporting, which outlines how much time kids spend on certain apps, and how often they used them
.
With another app called ScreenTime, parents can push a button on their phones to block usage on their children's devices. They can also set daily time limits for particular apps. The app, for Android, requires a subscription of $3.99 a month.
Kimberly Young, a psychologist who focuses on Internet addiction, believes parents need to control how much time their children spend on their devices. But she added an app might not be the best way to do it.
“I do not agree that any app is better than good old-fashioned parenting in terms of treating Internet addiction,” said Young, who added that she has seen children as young as 3 years old using mobile devices.
“The larger issue is how young is too young,” said Young.
Sah is also concerned about usage of devices by young children.
"Most kids can use smartphones before learning to write their names or tie their shoes,” he said.

"Eye Colour and Everything it tells about your Personality"
Have you ever wondered how our life would have been without the eyes? This beautiful colourful world would be nothing but just darkness filled with a profound sorrow. A person’s eyes are said to be the window to his soul. How true! You can’t be said to be really happy if your smile doesn’t reflect in your eyes. You know your best friend is sad as soon as you look at the sadness in her eyes. Often love starts just by looking in each other’s eyes and become spell bound. And sometimes it may end when you know your boyfriend is lying to you when he couldn’t look in your eyes. Charlotte Bronte the author of Jane Eyre had very aptly said that the soul, fortunately, has an interpreter – often an unconscious but still a faithful interpreter – in the eye. Your eyes interpret not just your feelings but also your personality. One can tell what kind of a person you are just by looking at your eyes. They are like an open book.
Green Eyes:
Green eyed people are very vibrant people and are found to be very creative. They love adventure and can take on any challenge on a whim. You would not want to hurt them in any way or be in their bad books because they will find a way to get back at you and have their revenge. They are very good speakers. They are very intelligent people and have a great passion towards their lives. They will not allow anyone to stand in their way of living their lives fully. They are passionate lovers and tend to have long relationships. But they can be very jealous sometimes. They are extremely good looking and of course their eye colour being the sexiest eye colour helps a lot. They love to make people laugh and are trustworthy. But if you say anything mean to them, they will always come up with a clever retort, making you look like a fool.
Blue Eyes:
Grey eyes:
People who have gray eyes are born to be leaders. They are most sought to resolve issues between people because they can easily understand the issues of both sides and come up with a sensible way to break the ice. They have a strong nature and remain strong in spite of facing any amount of external pressure. They can easily adapt themselves to any new environment. They encompass a unique personality and are people who tend to be very busy. They can’t be kept without doing anything for a long time. They are street smart, with good business sense and are witty in nature. They have a calm nature and people love to be around them. They have a very rational attitude and prove to be good secret keepers. They are not very adventurous. They tend to keep themselves and their surrounding neat and clean but are not obsessive about it. They are able to manage their lives easily with their practical thinking and wise decisions. They are very faithful and long for a permanent relationship. Once they find their soul mates they love them deeply and are very romantic lovers.
Hazel eyes:
Black eyes:
Black is one of the rare eye colours. People who usually have black eye colour have actually very dark brown eyes. What it tells about your personality is that you are a person who is lively and full of passion. You will not leave a work unless you finish it and give your 100 percent in whatever you do. You are competitive and try to show that you are able to do a task better than anybody else. People with black eyes are somewhat secretive too. They won’t easily trust you with their feelings. Thus, they are also reluctant to fall in love. But when they do, they prove to be very loyal. They usually have strong spiritual beliefs. These people are trustworthy and you can rely on them completely if you have given them some responsibility. They won’t let you down. These people with all their positive qualities are also very argumentative, even when they know they are wrong. People who have black eyes are also not very patient and can’t wait in long lines.
Brown eyes:
People have brown eyes because of large amount of melanin pigments in their eyes. Brown eye colour is also one of the most common eye colours all over the world. Brown colour is an earthy but rich colour. It represents simplicity, strength and creativity. If you are a person with brown colour then you are likely to be the life of a party. People with brown are close to nature and don’t have much love for materialistic possessions. They are great lovers and know how to make their partners feel special and are very trustworthy. They have charming looks and are adorable and are quite grounded. They are extroverts who love making new friends. But still they are afraid to express their feelings in front of others. They have a good sense of humour and can cheer you up anytime. They are wise and you will tend to go to them for any piece of advice. They are kind of your “go to” guy. They are quite creative and have a very good fashion sense.
