"Harley-Davidson's first electric motorcycle is Project LiveWire and you can ride it"

"Harley-Davidson's first electric motorcycle is Project LiveWire and you can ride it"

Legendary motorcycle builder Harley-Davidson teased an electric motorcycle with a video yesterday and now here it is. Project LiveWire is a part of Harley's attempt to expand its relevance beyond current riders and show off its new tech, with a not-in-production bike that it says is much more than just a trade-show prototype. Project LiveWire packs its electric motor into a polished case underneath the bike, and clearly the manufacturer is concerned about how customers may feel about losing signature touches like the V-twin engines and chrome pipes. The press release and video trailer promise "an unmistakeable new sound" like a jet on an aircraft carrier and tire shredding acceleration but don't have any specs to offer (according to Wired, the demo unit has 74hp, electrically limited 95mph top speed, 53 miles of range and charges in 3.5 hours).

Built on a one-piece frame with dual-sided rear swing arm suspension, it has LED lighting all over and even a colorful touchscreen display for its rider. Of course, the best way to figure out if its customers want an electric motorcycle is to put them on one, and the company is doing just that with a demo tour this year.%Slideshow-202542%

Fans will actually be able to ride the thing this year at any of 30 stops for "The Experience Tour" at Harley-Davidson dealerships along Route 66, or next year at other locations in the US, Canada and Europe. Even if you're not ready (or licensed) to take a motorcycle out on the road, it will have simulators for people to try out safely. The three stops announced so far include: New York June 24th- 25th, Boston 27th-29th and Philadelphia from July 17th - 19th. A few have already climbed on and report impressions that sound similar to our experiences with electric bikes like those from Zero Motorcycles and even Tesla's cars, with "amazing" torque and acceleration

These Tiny Robots Are Designed To 3D Print Whole Buildings

These Tiny Robots Are Designed To 3D Print Whole Buildings:

By now, large-scale 3D printing has been around for a few years. (Crazy, right?) But there's always been one big problem with existing technology: The printers need to be larger than the structures themselves. That's a problem that a team of researchers say they can solve with swarms of tiny robots.

The innovative thinkers at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia recently showed off a new kind of construction robot called Minibuilders. The idea behind these autonomous bots is that they divide up tasks to make the construction process cheaper and greener. The research team says that they'll make it possible to build bigger buildings without support structures—which are another requirement for traditionally 3D-printed buildings.

"The robots can work simultaneously while performing different tasks, and having a fixed size they can create objects of virtually any scale, as far as material properties permit," explain Petr Novikov and Sasa Jokic. "They are extremely easy to transport to the site. All these features make them incredibly efficient and reduce environmental footprint of construction."

The process itself sounds impressively simple. Fast Company's Adele Peters explains it succinctly:
The robots work in teams to squirt out material that hardens into the shell of the building. Foundation robots move in a track, building up the first 20 layers of the structure, and then a series of "grip" robots clamp on the top or sides adding more layers, ceilings, and frames for windows or doors. Vacuum robots attach on at the end to add a layer to reinforce everything.

So it sounds promising and simple, but that doesn't necessarily mean these little guys will be constructing skyscrapers in Midtown any time soon. For now, the researchers have shown proof of concept. You can watch the Minibuilders in action in a new video.

Now, the Spain-based research team wants to open up the floor for others to build on their inventions: They recently published the details of the robots' design and have asked their colleagues to chime in with improvements. In theory, this new approach to 3D-printed buildings could even be applied to other parts of the construction process like painting or piping, say the researchers.

Of course, it's still too early to say whether their technology will win out over other new types of 3D printing. For now, it's enough to see these little bots in action on a smaller scale—and know that before long, they could be printing bigger and better things

Samsung launches new Galaxy S5 with better screen and faster processor in Korea

Samsung launches new Galaxy S5 with better screen and faster processor in Korea:

Samsung is making its Galaxy S5 better with the introduction of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A. An improved version of the flagship device, it features an ultra-high resolution 5.1-inch QHD display (2560 x 1440 pixels, compared to the 1920 x 1080 original), a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, and LTE-A compatibility. LTE-A is an advanced form of LTE that offers improved download speeds — Samsung says the new S5 LTE-A can connect at up to 225Mbps.

The S5 LTE-A looks outwardly identical to the S5 we reviewed back in April. Its improved display matches LG's class-leading G3 in resolution, and surpasses it slightly in pixel density (576ppi versus the G3's 538ppi). Introduced in Korea today, It's unclear if Samsung is planing to release the device in the US, where LTE-A is still in testing.

Apple releases new low end iMac, starting at $1,099:

Apple releases new low end iMac, starting at $1,099:

Apple took down its online earlier this morning and has released a new low-end iMac with a starting price of $1099.00. For that entry fee, you can get a 1.4 GHz dual-core i5, 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and Intel HD graphics 5000.

Apple is lowering the cost of entry for its popular desktop computer, which the company hopes will keep its sales momentum moving forward. Starting at $1099, this puts it in close competition with other OEMs and reduces the ‘Apple tax’ that many associate with Apple products.

Obama, inventors check out electric giraffe

Obama, inventors check out electric giraffe:

"New tools and technologies are making the building of things easier than ever," Obama told entrepreneurs and students who gathered at the White House at its first "Maker Faire." ''There is a democratization of manufacturing that is potentially available because of technology."

As part of a weekslong emphasis on the economy, Obama was promoting the use of new tools and techniques to start up new businesses, to boost manufacturing and to strengthen science and math education.
"We've got to make sure that more Americans have the skills and opportunities to land a job in a growing industry or to create entire new industries," he said. "That's why I'm declaring today a national day of making."

Obama spoke after wandering outside from exhibit to exhibit on a sweltering day at the White House.
Besides the giant giraffe, a huge red weather balloon hovered over the Rose Garden and a menacing dinosaur head rested in a hallway.

A Philadelphia nonprofit group demonstrated a fuel-efficient car. Another showed off a solar energy unit.
"What on earth have you done to my house?" Obama joked.

Obama always seems engrossed by technological innovations, though he joked about the name "Maker Faire" as a gathering for new and creative products.
"Why is there an 'E' at the end of 'faire'?" he said. "Is there jousting? Do we all have to get dressed up, or what?....This is America. We don't have 'E's' at the end of 'fair.'"
More than 100 "makers" from 25 states were at the White House as Obama focused on helping fledgling businesses create and market their products. Obama was in Pittsburgh on Tuesday

pledging to make expanding manufacturing a priority for his remaining years in office.
The White House says 13 federal agencies are teaming up with companies like Etsy and Kickstarter to help Americans access startup capital and tools to develop new products.

"Nokia 'paid ransom hackers millions'"

"Nokia 'paid ransom hackers millions"

Finnish mobile maker Nokia was blackmailed into paying hackers millions of euros, a local broadcaster has reported.
MTV - not the music channel - said hackers threatened to reveal parts of Nokia's source code for its mobile operating system.
A police spokesman said an investigation involving blackmail and Nokia was under way, but did not give more details.
Nokia has refused to comment.
"We are investigating felony blackmail, with Nokia the injured party," Det Ch Insp Tero Haapala told .
He did not go into further detail about the precise nature of the case.
However, Finnish television channel MTV said hackers had acquired encryption codes relating to Nokia's Symbian software - and had threatened to make the information public.
If they had done so, it could have made it difficult for Nokia to prevent the spread of malicious software on its smartphone devices.

'Lost track'

MTV reported that Nokia contacted Finnish police and had arranged to pay a ransom fee in a car park.
The money was picked up, the broadcaster said, but police "lost track" of the culprits.
A spokesperson for Finnish police could not be reached by the BBC on Wednesday.
Nokia - of which the handset division was recently acquired by computing giant Microsoft - now runs Windows Phone software on the majority of its devices.

Hackers demanding ransoms is a growing threat, according to security firms.
Last year, it emerged that police in Massachusetts had paid a ransom after their systems were hit with the Cryptolocker ransom virus.

Paying up is not to be encouraged, said Jon French, a senior security analyst for AppRiver.
"Paying can only further show other hackers that they have a chance of making a lot of money from these corporations," he said.
"Nokia seems to have gotten incredibly lucky that the hacker didn't release the key anyways."

Report: Chinese phone comes preloaded with spyware

Report: Chinese phone comes preloaded with spyware

BERLIN — A German security firm says that a cheap brand of Chinese-made smartphone comes preinstalled with espionage software.
G Data Software says it ordered a Star N9500 handset from an online retailer last month and found malicious code hidden deep in the device's proprietary software.
The firm said the spyware could allow a third party to steal personal data, place rogue calls, or even use the phone's camera and microphone as improvised surveillance devices.
The find is the latest in a series of incidents where smartphones have appeared on customers' doorsteps preloaded with malicious software.
Star's manufacturer could not immediately be located, even though the phone is carried by several major retailers.
G Data said Tuesday it spent more than a week trying to track the phone's maker without success.

FOODS THAT KEEP HAIR FROM GROWING

"FOODS THAT KEEP HAIR FROM GROWING"

SUGAR:

For your hair’s sake, please step away from the sweets. Sugar can interfere with the absorption of protein and we all know how important protein is for your hair. Vitamin E is also essential for healthy hair growth and sugar can lower the level of vitamin E that needs to get to your strands! Don’t fret-- this doesn't mean you have to cut out sugar altogether. It just means that you should reduce your intake. You should consider substituting for natural sources of sugar like fruits or vegetables if you can't kick the habit.

SALT:

Extra salt is delicious on fries, popcorn or that bland dish that you got while eating out for lunch. But, it should be used in moderation because excess sodium has been shown to cause hair to shed excessively. Sodium should be limited to less than 2300 mg a day and even less if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or are over the age of 51. If you want to keep your curls full of body, sprinkle with caution.

SOFT DRINKS :

It can be hard to give up that lunchtime soda because it compliments your meal and provides a kick of caffeine in order to get through the day, but consider what's really going on when you pick up that carbonated soft drink. One soda contains an inordinate amount of processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and chemical-filled colors that don't provide any nutrients for your hair-- except completely dry out your hair. Even if you’re sipping on water, soda will still contribute to the dehydration of your strands and turn your cute curls into a brittle mess.

BLEACHED WHITE FLOUR:

Starchy foods are broken down into sugar and can cause your hair to thin. If you love having starchy foods like bread, pastas, cakes, and other floury deliciousness, it's time to consider consumer smaller amount, just for a while.
