It's Freakishly Easy To Steal Phone PINs With Google Glass

It's Freakishly Easy To Steal Phone PINs With Google Glass
Kate Knibbs
Gizmodo

Not feeling paranoid enough today? Here you go: Your phone lock screen might actually make it easier for nefarious cyber bandits to steal your passwords.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Lowell recently conducted a study illustrating how easy it is to steal phone PINS, even from across the room. They used cameras on Google Glass, an iPhone 5, and a Logitech webcam to test how well these devices can record when people entered their passwords. Glass could detect someone's PIN with 83 percent accuracy from 3 meters away, even when the screen wasn't visible. The webcam correctly recorded passwords with 92 percent accuracy.
The iPhone 5 camera detected the passcode every single time.

Wired talked to Xinwen Fu, a computer scientist working on the project. "I think of this as a kind of alert about Google Glass, smartwatches, all these devices," Fu told them. "If someone can take a video of you typing on the screen, you lose everything."

It's not exactly news that people can use their mobile devices to snake your information. The threat of constant, surreptitious surveillance is one of the reasons people are wary of Google Glass.

As Forbes recently pointed out, hackers have even devised ways to automate over-the-shoulder password theft. This specific research is freaky because it shows that people can figure out and record your passwords even if they can't see your screen; it offers no respite to the paranoid PIN-typer hunching over and cupping her hand across the top of her phone. And once someone has your phone passcode, they often have a golden ticket to your bank accounts, since ATM PINs are typically four-digit codes as well.

So, what is to be done? Make your mobile PIN different than your ATM PIN or other important passcodes, for starters. Choosing a password other than 1234 or 1111 is also something you should've already done, because those passwords are dumb. For iPhone users, you can  turn off the "Simple Passcode" in Settings to give yourself a longer, more complicated password. For Android, you can choose to unlock your phone via facial recognition if you have Ice Cream Sandwich or higher, or select a more sophisticated lock screen password than the standard four-digit option.

Fu and the UMass researchers created an Android app called Privacy Enhancing Keyboard that will randomize the order of the numbers as they appear on your passcode screen, which would make it much harder to figure out what someone types in. They plan to release it after they give a Black Hat talk on their research. Hopefully their talk will spark increased interest in developing even more sophisticated options to keep passwords secure.

Bill Gates has already patented a potential solution: An anti-camera protection technology that will scan an area for potential cameras and alert device users if they're being recorded. [Wired]

Microsoft Has Just Launched Its First Android Smartphone, The Nokia X2

Microsoft Has Just Launched Its First Android Smartphone, The Nokia X2

Meet the Nokia X2, the first Android-based smartphone being made by Microsoft.
Yes, you read that right: Microsoft has just made a new Android-based handset.
It’s not the first Android device Microsoft owns, being as Redmond took over Nokia’s mobile making division in April – a move which brought the original Nokia X device under its wing. But some doubted whether Microsoft approved of Nokia’s Android experiment — and speculated that the line would be quickly culled by Redmond.

Nokia forked Android back in February to create a new smartphone platform, which it called the Nokia X Software Platform to slot in between — pricing-wise — its Series 40 based low cost Asha devices and its Windows Phone powered Lumia smartphones.

At the time Nokia described the fork as a Lumia “feeder” — with then CEO Stephen Elop saying Nokia X devices would be a Trojan horse within Google’s ecosystem by introducing first time smartphone owners to Microsoft’s services rather than Mountain View’s.

Evidently Microsoft approves of this strategy after all — since it’s now building on that experiment with a follow up device. Or at least it’s willing to give the fork a chance.
The Nokia X2 is priced at €99 before taxes and subsidies (a little up on the original Nokia X’s €89 price-tag), and has a slightly larger screen (4.3 inches vs 4 inches), along with a beefier processor (1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor vs 1GHz dual-core in the original device).

Otherwise it’s much the same fare, with the handset coming in a range of eye-popping colours and featuring Nokia’s blend of UI experiences — with a Windows Phone-esque tiles-based homescreen, combined with Nokia’s Fast Lane notifications screen, plus plentiful Microsoft (and Nokia) services preloaded, including Skype, Outlook, OneDrive, Mix Radio, Here Maps; and — of course — access to Android apps.

The X2 also supports dual-SIM — a popular feature in emerging markets Microsoft will be hoping the Nokia X platform can better compete with other Android rivals than Windows Phone has been able to, thanks to apps and by reaching a lower price tag than even the entry level Lumias.
The Nokia X2 extends the original trio of devices on the platform which were the Nokia X, X+ and XL.

You might recall that in 2013, loom bracelets were touted as the new Silly Bandz, with kids everywhere buying DIY kits, and celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles stepping out wearing the rubber band bracelets. It seems they’ve gotten a boost again thanks to Kate Middleton, who wore one during her recent trip to New Zealand and Australia. And by boost, we mean sales are up over 300 percent at certain retailers.

Lip Colors You Must Try This Summer

Lip Colors You Must Try This Summer

Fire Engine Red:

A red hot lip is clearly a perfect choice for summer because it is the color most closely associated with heat and fire. Instead of wearing a darker brick color in the summer, it's best to go for a truly bright shade, like fire engine red.

Tangerine:

Tangerine is one of those colors that was just made for summer. If you love the color of peach but want to dial up the drama a bit, then tangerine is your go-to summer lipstick shade.

Peach:

A juicy shade of peach is one of the ultimate lip colors for summer, because it gives off a beachy, laid-back vibe that will get you into vacation mode, pronto. Complete your look with two coats of waterproof mascara, and you've got the perfect summer beauty routine.

Lilac:

This shade of purple may seem a little out-of-the-box at first, but don't be scared. A pale shade of lilac transitions seamlessly from a day at the beach to a hot summer's night out in the city. Plus, this gorgeous lip color will brighten up your complexion and make you glow.

Pepto Pink:

An ultra bright pink is such a joyful shade, and it's one of the quintessential summer lip colors. Pale pink is nice for spring, but an electric shade is perfect for summer. As long as you keep the rest of your makeup routine minimal, don't be afraid to go for a loud lipstick.

PlunderNauts (Free + IAP)
Pirates in space is a theme that's been tapped by numerous games and TV shows in the past, with PlunderNauts an impressive update of the idea. Your job is to loot galactic booty (so to speak) in your spaceship, crafting weapons and upgrades to keep your fleet in shape, and plotting your space-battle strategy.
iPhone / iPad
Stick Soccer (Free + IAP)
This is the work of Stick Sports, following its previous Stick Cricket and Stick Tennis games. Here, you're flicking a ball to score goals – one of a growing number of "flick-to-kick" mobile games. One neat feature: you choose your country then see your points count towards its total in a global contest.
iPhone / iPad
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril (£2.99 + IAP)
There are plenty of fans of the various Lego games, with Marvel's Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man and other super heroes the latest to get blocked up for an action-adventure. More than 90 characters, in all, with 45 missions to play through – themed packs provide access to the different heroes.
iPhone / iPad
Powerpuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville (£2.49)
Earlier this month, Cartoon Network announced that it would be developing new episodes of its Powerpuff Girls cartoon – the first since 2005. But in advance of those, here's an official mobile game for Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. It's a fun action-adventure as you explore its Townsville setting, unlock new abilities and battle big bosses.
iPhone / iPad
Mucho Party (£2.49)
Microgames – think Wario Ware – have been a hit on other devices. Mucho Party is trying to do a similar thing for iOS, with 30 games designed for fast multiplayer fun. The idea: you take on a friend across the various games, although there are AI-controlled players when nobody else is with you. Colourful and silly, in the best sense of the word.
iPhone / iPad
Dungeon Gems (Free + IAP)
The inspiration for this Gameloft game is clear: lucrative puzzle-RPG game Puzzle & Dragons. As in that game, you're fighting monsters by matching shapes – runes in this case. There are 220 heroes from which to marshal your party, and – as ever for this genre – in-app purchases to speed your development if desired.
iPhone / iPad
Hero Hunt (Free + IAP)
Hero Hunt looks interesting: a "tactical collectible card game" where you collect and upgrade superheroes, then send them into three-on-three battles where you swipe at enemies to cast spells and launch attacks. There's a solo quest mode plus the option to battle other players and form clans.
iPhone / iPad
Transformers: Age of Extinction (Free + IAP)
Another big movie brand gets a mobile game, this time from Japanese publisher Mobage. It's a "3D combat runner" starring the Autobots and Decepticons, as you switch between robot and vehicle while powering through the levels, unlocking new Transformers as you go.
iPhone / iPad
ColourColor (Free + IAP)
Finally, something really intriguing: a colour-matching social game for iPhone. You play by taking a photo of something nearby, then challenging a friend to find something near them with as close a colour match as possible. It has the potential to be a Draw Something-style success, if enough people pick it up.

Universal Orlando to open new Harry Potter ride in July

Universal Orlando to open new Harry Potter ride in July
Barbara Liston, Reuters

ORLANDO Fla. - The much-anticipated expansion of Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter will open on July 8, the theme park said on Wednesday ahead of a preview of the new attraction.
The attraction, Diagon Alley, is expected to provide a boost for the park's revenues and for tourism in central Florida.
Diagon Alley recreates the wizarding business district in London described in J. K. Rowling’s popular book and movie series. Universal said it would reveal more details on Wednesday evening at a red carpet event and media preview.
It expands the original Harry Potter attraction, opened in 2010 and modeled after Hogsmeade village, home of the Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Diagon Alley will feature a new signature ride called Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, the company announced in January. It is also geared toward eateries and souvenir  shops, both of which drew bottleneck crowds at the initial Hogsmeade village attraction.
To visit both sections of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, guests will have to buy a more expensive two-park pass, which costs $136 plus tax, because Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley were built in separate Universal parks.
The two attractions are connected by a train called Hogwarts Express, which is also featured in the Harry Potter series.
