football worldcup "Luis Suarez Bites Yet Again"

Luis Suarez Bites Yet Again:

By GRAHAM DUNBAR, AP Sports Writer
Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- FIFA has officially charged Uruguay's Luis Suarez with biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in the teams' World Cup match, a process that could lead to a suspension for Uruguay's best offensive player.

FIFA announced early Wednesday that its disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against Suarez, just hours after the end of Tuesday's match.
If the panel finds Suarez guilty of assaulting an opponent, FIFA rules call for a ban of at least two matches up to a maximum of 24 months.
FIFA asked the team to present evidence, which can include video recordings, by 5 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) Wednesday.
A decision must be published before Saturday, when Uruguay plays Colombia in a round-of-16 match at Maracana stadium

Uruguay advanced by beating Italy 1-0 on Tuesday in Natal. One minute before the decisive goal, Suarez clashed with Chiellini and was caught by television cameras apparently biting his shoulder.

Match referee Marco Rodriguez of Mexico appeared not to see the incident and took no action.
Brazil's World Cup has been a high-scoring tournament featuring late goals, comebacks, full stadiums and underdog stories, but the bite was got much of the global attention Tuesday.

Earlier in his career, the 27-year-old Suarez was suspended in the Netherlands and England for biting opponents. He didn't confirm or deny biting Chiellini, but said he was angry that the Italian defender had hit him in the eye during the game.

''These are things that happen on the pitch, we were both in the area, he thrust his shoulder into me,'' Suarez said in Spanish. ''These things happen on the pitch, and we don't have to give them so much (importance).''
FIFA's disciplinary panel ''is responsible for sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials' attention,'' the governing body said in a statement.

''Any type of proof may be produced,'' FIFA noted, including ''reports from referees, declarations from the parties and witnesses, material evidence, audio or video recordings.''

FIFA set a World Cup precedent for using video review in 1994.
Then, in a quarterfinal, Italy defender Mauro Tassotti's elbow to the face of Spain's Luis Enrique escaped the referee's attention. FIFA later banned Tassotti for eight international matches.

Reasons You Should Start Eating Potato

Reasons You Should Start Eating Potato

Nutritionists tell us that potatoes are not only tasty additions to any diet but carry enormous health benefits as well. What does this mean to your dinner time? Check out these benefits of eating potatoes and you will find out why you should bring potato to your every day meal.
Potato is high in vitamin B6This Vitamin helps reduce the chemical homocysteine in your body which has been linked with degenerative diseases, as well as the prevention of heart attacks.
Potato is a good source of vitamin CWhile most of you know that vitamin C is important to help get rid of cold and flu viruses, few of you are aware that this crucial vitamin plays an important role in tooth and bone formation, digestion and blood cell formation. Vitamin C helps accelerate healing of wound, produces collagen which helps maintain youthful elasticity of your skin and is essential to helping you cope with stress. It even appears to help protect your body against toxins that might be linked to cancer.
Potato contains Vitamin D
This vitamin is critical for your immune system and overall health especially during cold seasons. Both a vitamin and a hormone, vitamin D is primarily made in your body as a result of getting adequate sunlight. You might have heard about seasonal affective disorder, or sad as it is also known, which is linked to inadequate sunlight and therefore a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D plays an important role in your mood, energy level and helps to build healthy bones, heart, nerves, skin and teeth and as well supports your thyroid gland.
Potato contains iron
Most people are aware that a human needs the mineral iron to have adequate energy, but iron plays other important roles in your body, including white and red blood cell production, resistance to stress, proper immune functioning and the metabolizing of protein, among the others.
Potato is a good source of magnesium
Magnesium is the relaxation and anti stress mineral. It is essential for healthy artery, blood, bone; heart, muscle and nerve system, yet scientists estimate that approximately 75 percent of the population of North countries may be deficient in this important mineral.
Potato is a source of potassiumOne of the important electrolytes that help regulate heartbeat and nerve signals is potassium. Like the other electrolytes, it performs several essential functions, some of that include relaxing muscle contractions, reducing swelling, protecting and controlling the activity of your kidneys.
Potato is naturally sweet
Their natural sugar is slowly released into the bloodstream, helping to ensure a balanced and regular source of energy, without the glucose spikes linked to fatigue and weight gain.
Potato is high in carotenoids
Potato’s rich orange color indicates that they are full of carotenoids such as ß carotene and other ones, which is the precursor to vitamin A in the body. Carotenoids help strengthen your eyesight and boost your immune system. They are useful antioxidants that help ward off cancer and protect against the effects of aging. Studies at one university of more than 125,000 people showed a 30 percent reduction in risk of lung cancer in people who consumed a variety of carotenoid rich foods as part of their regular diet. Another research of women who had done treatment for early stage breast cancer conducted by researchers found that women with the highest blood concentrations of carotenoids had the least likelihood of cancer recurrence.
Potato is versatile
Try roasted, puréed, steamed, baked, or grilled potatoes. You can add potatoes to stews and soups, or grill and put on top of leafy greens for a delicious salad. Enjoy grilling them with onions and red peppers for amazing sandwich or wrap ingredients. Puree potatoes and add to smoothies and baked goods.

Google I/O 2014 to unveil new Android version, wearables:

Google I/O 2014 to unveil new Android version, wearables:

An Android update, wearable gadgets and so-called smart home devices are just some of the innovations Google is likely to show off at its two-day developer conference, which begins Wednesday in San Francisco.

In recent years, the conference has focused on smartphones and tablets, but this year Google's Android operating system is expected to stretch -into cars, homes and smartwatches.
Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson believes Google will unveil a new version of its Android operating system - possibly called Lollipop - with a "heavy focus" on extensions for smartwatches and smart home devices.
"We think Google will directly counter Apple's recent announcements of health products (Apple HealthKit) and home automation (Apple HomeKit)," Wilson wrote in a note to investors.

Google's I/O event comes at a time of transition for the company, which makes most of its money from advertising thanks to its status as the world's leader in online search. The company is trying to adjust to an ongoing shift to smartphones and tablet computers from desktop and laptop PCs. Though mobile advertising is growing rapidly, advertising aimed at PC users still generates more money.
At the same time, Google is angling to stay at the forefront of innovation by taking gambles on new, sometimes unproven technologies that take years to pay off -if at all. Driverless cars, Google Glass, smartwatches and thinking thermostats are just some of its more far-off bets.
On the home front, Google's Nest Labs -which makes network-connected thermostats and smoke detectors- announced earlier this week that it has created a program that allows outside developers, from tiny startups to large companies such as Whirlpool and Mercedes-Benz, to fashion software and "new experiences" for its products.

Integration with Mercedes-Benz, for example, might mean that a car can notify a Nest thermostat when it's getting close to home, so the device can have the home's temperature adjusted to the driver's liking before he or she arrives.

Nest's founder, Tony Fadell, is an Apple veteran who helped design the iPod and the iPhone. Google bought the company earlier this year for $3.2 billion.

Opening the Nest platform to outside developers will allow Google to move into the emerging market for connected, smart home devices. Experts expect that this so-called "Internet of Things" phenomenon will change the way people use technology in much the same way that smartphones have changed life since the introduction of Apple's iPhone seven years ago.
Google is also likely to unveil some advances in wearable technology.

In March, Google released "Android Wear," a version of its operating system tailored to computerized wristwatches and other wearable devices. Although there are already several smartwatches on the market, the devices are more popular with gadget geeks and fitness fanatics than regular consumers. But Google could help change that with Android Wear. Android, after all, is already the world's most popular smartphone operating system.

Google may also have news about Glass, including when the company might launch a new and perhaps less expensive version of the $1,500 Internet-connected eyewear. Google will likely have to lower the price if it wants Glass to reach a broader audience. But that's just one hurdle. Convincing people that the gadget is useful, rather than creepy, is another one.

Google sets sights beyond smartphones at annual developer conference

Google sets sights beyond smartphones at annual developer conference

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO — Google Inc, whose Android software reigns as the world’s dominant smartphone operating system, will step up efforts to make inroads into cars, televisions and other devices at its annual developer conference this week, sources familiar with the matter said.

The Internet company is racing against rivals such as Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics Co and other companies to extend its business into a broadening field of Internet-connected devices.

“It's a land grab,” said Sameet Sinha, an analyst with investment bank B. Riley & Co. “The person who gets a platform which controls the devices could be the dominant operating system, not of just devices, it could be the operating system of your home.”

“New platforms offer new opportunities for hardware sales, advertising sales, e-commerce sales, all of these,” Sinha said.

Google would not say whether Chief Executive Larry Page will speak at the two-day Google I/O conference, which begins on Thursday morning and is expected to draw more than 6,000 developers from around the world.

Google's free Android software is used in more than three out of every four smartphones sold globally, providing Google with a valuable entry point for consumers to access its money-making online services such as Web search and maps. In March, Google announced plans to create a special version of Android designed for smartwatches.

Google is expected to provide an update on its plans to integrate Android into automobiles, making it easier for drivers and passengers to access navigation and entertainment features available on their smartphones, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The company could also unveil a new service that tracks a user's health and personal fitness information, similar to recently introduced services from Apple and Samsung, said another person familiar with the matter.
A Google spokeswoman declined to comment on any of the conference's potential announcements.
Among the events aimed at developers during the conference at San Francisco’s Moscone Center are sessions titled “Wearable computing with Google” and “Build for the multi-device Web," according to the official Google I/O website.

There will also be sessions focused on Nest Labs, the maker of smart thermostats and other home appliances which Google acquired for $3.2 billion in January. On Monday, Nest said it would for the first time allow other companies to create apps that communicate with its devices.

Google may also showcase a version of Android designed for televisions, according to technology blog The Verge. A TV version of Android would come four years after Google’s first effort to enter the living room, Google TV, failed to catch on with consumers.

Scientists simulate time travel using light particles

Scientists simulate time travel using light particles
Jon Fingas
Engadget

We may never see practical time travel in our lifetimes, if it's possible at all. However, a team at the University of Queensland has given the Doc Browns of the world a faint glimmer of hope by simulating time travel on a very, very small scale. Their study used individual photons to replicate a quantum particle traveling through a space-time loop (like the one you see above) to arrive where and when it began. Since these particles are inherently uncertain, there wasn't room for the paradoxes that normally thwart this sort of research. The particle couldn't destroy itself before it went on its journey, for example.
As you might have gathered from the "simulation" term, sci-fi isn't about to become reality just yet. The scientists haven't actually warped through time -- they've only shown how it can work. It could take a long time before there's proof that whole atoms and objects can make the leap, let alone a real-world demonstration. Should you ever step into a time machine, though, you'll know where it all started... and ended.

South Korean ferry survivors return to school, vow not to forget:

South Korean ferry survivors return to school, vow not to forget:
By Ju-min Park
Reuters

ANSAN South Korea (Reuters) - Holding hands as they walked through the school gates, some fighting back tears, 75 children who survived South Korea's worst maritime disaster in 20 years, returned to class on Wednesday vowing to remember their lost friends.

Wailing parents of the 250 children who did not survive, when a ferry taking them on a school trip capsized and sank, greeted the children outside the Danwon Highschool.

Some grieving parents held signs, one of which read: "We love you."

"Grownups are constantly telling us to forget and cheer up," an 18-year-old boy who spoke for the survivors said, fighting back tears. "But we will remember and recollect our friends. Because not forgetting them is what we can do at best. Just as we will remember them, please don't forget them."

Two months after the Sewol ferry sank and killed more than 300 passengers, the surviving children were brought to school in five buses under a police escort.

Many were wearing bracelets engraved with the message, "Remember 0416," and all were accompanied by their parents.

On April 16, the Sewol ferry sharply listed and capsized on a routine overnight journey from Incheon, the port city one hour drive from the children's hometown, to the vacation island of Jeju, overloaded with cargo and sailing too fast on a turn.

Most of the 325 students who listened to the order to stay in the cabins were trapped as the vessel sank and paid for their obedience with the lives.

"Our friends and teachers had to leave us because of irresponsible and selfish adults," said one of the students before going to class.

The 15 surviving crew members are on trial, with four including the captain charged with homicide, amid a national outcry of anger after video footage showed them fleeing the vessel as it began to list after telling passengers to stay put.

The government of President Park Geun-hye has also been bitterly criticized for the slow and ineffective handling of the disaster and the incompetence displayed in the rescue operation.
The prime minister has resigned and Park has announced the breakup of the Coast Guard citing incompetence.

A massive manhunt has failed to capture the man seen as the effective owner of the company that operated the ferry. Yoo Byung-un is wanted on charges of embezzlement stemming from his control over a web of business interests owned by his sons, including Chonghaejin Marine, the ferry operator.

For the survivors and their parents, the two months since the sinking has been a painful time of soul searching, debating whether to transfer to other schools.

But they ultimately decided to return to the familiar surrounds of Danwon Highschool and try and heal the emotional scars, receiving therapy at the school, said Park Suck-soon, the father of one of the survivors.

"The kids are coming back to school, carrying the terrible experience of having gone through the ship sinking and the evacuation and losing their friends and teachers," he said, adding "Don't forget April 16".

Woman or machine? New robots look creepily human

Woman or machine? New robots look creepily human

YURI KAGEYAMA
Associated Press

TOKYO — The new robot guides at a Tokyo museum look so eerily human and speak so smoothly they almost outdo people — almost.
Japanese robotics expert Hiroshi Ishiguro, an Osaka University professor, says they will be useful for research on how people interact with robots and on what differentiates the person from the machine.
"Making androids is about exploring what it means to be human," he told reporters Tuesday, "examining the question of what is emotion, what is awareness, what is thinking."

In a demonstration, the remote-controlled machines moved their pink lips in time to a voice-over, twitched their eyebrows, blinked and swayed their heads from side to side. They stay seated but can move their hands.

In a clear triumph, Kodomoroid read the news without stumbling once and recited complex tongue-twisters glibly.

The robot, designed with a girlish appearance, can use a variety of voices, such as a deep male voice one minute and a squeaky girly voice the next. The speech can be input by text, giving them perfect articulation, according to Ishiguro.
There were some glitches — such as the lips not moving at all while the robot spoke, or the Otonaroid announcer robot staying silent twice when asked to introduce itself.

But glitches are common with robots because they are delicate gadgetry sensitive to their environment.
Kodomoroid and the woman robot Otonaroid were joined at the demonstration by the minimally designed Telenoid, a mannequin head with pointed arms that serves as a cuddly companion.

The two life-size robots, which have silicon skin and artificial muscles, will be on display starting Wednesday, at Miraikan museum, or the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, in Tokyo, allowing the public to interact with them extensively.

Reflecting widespread opinion, Ishiguro said Japan leads the world in playful companion robots. But he acknowledged the nation was behind the U.S. in military robots.

Developing robots for more than 20 years, Ishiguro has made a point of creating robots that approximate the human appearance, including creatures that look like him. He has sent them to give overseas lectures.
His approach differs from some robotics scientists who say human appearance is pointless, perhaps creepy, and robots can look like machines, such as taking the form of a TV screen or a portable device.

Ishiguro noted proudly how Japanese Internet company Softbank Corp. recently showed a robot named Pepper, which looks a little like C-3PO in "Star Wars," and will sell for less than 200,000 yen ($2,000).
Pepper's arrival means robots are increasingly becoming part of everyday life in Japan.
"Robots are now becoming affordable — no different from owning a laptop," said Ishiguro.
