New patent points to iPhone that knows when it's been stolen

New patent points to iPhone that knows when it's been stolen

Forget Touch ID, Apple has dreamed up a way for your iPhone to recognize who you are simply by how you use it. In a new patent titled "Generating Notifications Based On User Behavior," Apple describes a way for a mobile operating system to identify patterns in your usage, and could even be used to automatically lock down the device in the event that it is stolen.

The system stores a massive amount of data based on usage. Everything from the way you type to the accelerometer readings when you're using the device while walking can be used as a historical reference. If a user's patterns don't match that of the device's owner, the device can lock itself down to prevent usage or curb the risk of identity theft.

As with all Apple patents -- particularly the ones that sound ridiculously cool -- there's a great chance we'll never see this feature materialize in a retail device. That said, Apple seems to be all about personal user security these days, and such a feature would definitely be in line with that trend.

Facebook Now Lets You Buy Things Straight From Your News Feed

Facebook Now Lets You Buy Things Straight From Your News Feed

Facebook is just full of surprises today. After releasing its new Moments app earlier, the company has just announced the latest in its long history of experiments: Giving you the ability to buy things straight from your News Feed.

At least for right now, Facebook is keeping the option limited to "a few small and medium-sized businesses in the US" while they look over feedback. Still, the move itself isn't all that surprising considering Facebook's recent push to unite advertisers with their customer bases. And while privacy has been a major concern with these moves in the past, Facebook assures us that they've got it under control:

We've built this feature with privacy in mind, and have taken steps to help make the payment experience safe and secure. None of the credit or debit card information people share with Facebook when completing a transaction will be shared with other advertisers, and people can select whether or not they'd like to save payment information for future purchases.

You should be seeing the "Buy" option on both the web and mobile versions of Facebook starting today. So what do you think—would you actually be wiling to make purchases based on what you see in your News Feed alone? [Facebook]

How to Set Your Mapping App's Sights on the Scenic Route

How to Set Your Mapping App's Sights on the Scenic Route

Lex Berko
CityLab

Mapping apps are a fantastic tool, but they can be a little soulless. They'll get you from point A to point B quickly, but the route itself might make for a garbage-strewn, treeless journey. After all, how could a mapping service know how to take the scenic value of a route into account when calculating directions? Soon, one might.

Inspired in part by psychogeography theory (which emphasizes playfulness in travel), a group of researchers from Yahoo! Labs in Barcelona sought to add a bit of pep to these services. In a newly released paper, they explore how mapping apps could theoretically generate short walking routes that are more beautiful or quiet than standard offerings.

“We quantify how people psychologically perceive the urban environment, and using existing algorithms, we identify pleasurable detours,” the researchers told CityLab in an email.

But how do you quantify concepts as nebulous as beauty or happiness? In this case, the researchers turned to crowdsourced data obtained from UrbanGems.org. The website juxtaposes photographs of two locations in London, the test city for the experiment, and asks users to choose which is the more beautiful, happy, or quiet of the pair. The researchers received input from more than 3,000 participants over a four-month period beginning in September 2012.

“Concepts like beauty and happiness are subjective indeed,” the researchers say. “But, in our crowdsourcing experiment, we found that if you ask a large enough number of people to pick between two pictures [and choose] which one is more beautiful or which one makes them happier, consensus usually emerges.”

Once they had their consensus, the researchers ranked locations according to their pleasantness and combined those ranks with pre-existing algorithms to propose new routes. They then enlisted 30 people familiar with London as judges. In order to control for other factors that might influence their perception, such as weather or time of day, the participants did not actually walk the routes, but evaluated them based on their knowledge of the city.

“This approach turned out to give very promising results,” explain the researchers. The respondents not only managed to identify the quality correlated with each path, but gave detailed rationales for why they imagined a path to be more beautiful, happy, or quiet than another.

Ultimately, the recommended routes ended up only being about 12 percent longer than the shortest route produced by common mapping services. Translated to real life, that 12 percent equates to a not-so-whopping seven-and-a-half minutes tacked on to your trip. For most people, that is a totally doable trade-off for a more delightful walk.

The next question is how to export this experiment to other cities. Crowdsourcing this sort of data is too intensive a strategy to use for every city worldwide, so the researchers turned elsewhere, namely to the photosharing site Flickr, which is also owned by Yahoo!. They were able to prove that Flickr metadata acts as a good alternative to crowdsourcing and, using the metadata, successfully expanded their routing experiment to Boston.
Some people might not be charmed by an experiment that relies on squishy concepts like beauty and happiness. But the researchers chose those particular characteristics because “they are at the core of academic work on urban well-being.” If you prefer to investigate the more unusual corners of your city, you could, in theory, tweak this experiment to focus on whatever aspect of a city beguiles you most by crowdsourcing locations that fit your chosen variable.

Whatever you think of the experiment itself (which may eventually become a mobile app), the underlying gist of the proposal is valuable: Small interventions in your everyday routine can generate a more comprehensive urban experience. Your commute to work and your walk to the shop don’t have to be so myopic and destination-driven. If you give yourself an extra 10 minutes for a small detour on your journey, it can transform your experience of the city into something altogether more enjoyable.

Microsoft to cut 18,000 jobs this year as it chops Nokia

Microsoft to cut 18,000 jobs this year as it chops Nokia

Bill Rigby
Reuters

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp will slash up to 18,000 jobs, or 14 percent of its workforce, this year as it almost halves the size of its newly acquired Nokia phone business and tries to transform into a cloud-computing and mobile-friendly software company.

The larger-than-expected cuts, announced on Thursday, are the deepest in the company's 39-year history and come five months into the tenure of Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella. He outlined plans for a "leaner" business in a public memo to employees last week.

"We will simplify the way we work to drive greater accountability, become more agile and move faster," Nadella wrote to employees in a memo made public early Thursday. "We plan to have fewer layers of management, both top down and sideways, to accelerate the flow of information and decision making."
Beyond the Nokia reductions, Nadella gave few clues about where the axe will fall or what areas will receive more funding, saying he will flesh out his plans after Microsoft's quarterly earnings report on July 22.
The size of the cuts were welcomed by Wall Street, which viewed Microsoft as bloated under previous CEO Steve Ballmer, topping 127,000 in headcount after absorbing Nokia earlier this year.

"This is about double what the Street was expecting," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets. "Nadella is clearing the decks for the new fiscal year. He is cleaning up part of the mess that Ballmer left."
Microsoft shares jumped 1.7 percent to $44.84 on Nasdaq, reaching their highest since the technology stock boom of 2000.

About 12,500 of the layoffs will come from eliminating overlaps with the Nokia unit, which Microsoft acquired in April for $7.2 billion (4.21 billion pounds), with the bulk of the cuts coming from Nokia itself. The acquisition of Nokia's handset business in April added 25,000 people to Microsoft's payroll.

You'll Never Believe Which Member of One Direction Wanted to Go Solo

You'll Never Believe Which Member of One Direction Wanted to Go Solo

With so many rumors flying around about whether or not anyone is leaving One Direction, we were intrigued to hear that one member of the band definitely wanted a solo career. Although Harry Styles and Zayn Malik have both been rumored to be leaving the band to pursue their own interests, X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger says that it was Liam Payne who really wanted his own career.
"When I put the group together, Liam was hesitant about it because he wanted to go solo," Nicole told PopJustice.
Obviously, Liam couldn't predict how awesome they would sound together, but he hasn't shown any signs of wanting to leave the band now. In fact, Liam has even tweeted the most adorable things about his bandmates, and seems to love them more and more, the longer they perform together. It's crazy that he almost didn't join them!

A New Translation App from Frommer’s

A New Translation App from Frommer’s

ELAINE GLUSAC, The New York Times

Perhaps you already know that “buongiorno” is the appropriate greeting in Rome. But what about the concept of “bella figura”? The new translation app from the guidebook publisher Frommer’s covers both linguistic and cultural interpretations.
“We want it to be a translator in many different forms,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of Frommer Media which, will launch Frommer’s Translator available for Android and iOS devices beginning Monday, July 14.

The free app is a partnership between Frommer’s and the language translator app company TripLingo. The latter provides instant language translation including a voice translator, available in 45 languages, that allows the user to speak a sentence in English (“How much is that?”) and have the app voice and type it in the foreign language (“Quanto questo costo?” in Italian).

A phrase book offers options for essentials like “How are you?” in formal, casual, slang and “crazy,” or highly embellished, versions. There is also an option for live translation assistance.
Drawing on its guidebook expertise, Frommer’s covers the app’s culture guide, featuring etiquette, dining and travel tips, a detailed overview of doing business abroad, and guidebook-style introductory and history features.

Additional tools include a currency converter, tip calculator and a “Wi-Fi dialer” that allows you to make telephone calls over the Internet inexpensively.

Upgrades, at $10 per month or $50 per year, expand language content, although the full cultural primer – including the advice, in Italy, to present a “bella figura” or stylish presence — is available on the free version.

Samsung Looking to Buy Home Automation Startup SmartThings

Samsung Looking to Buy Home Automation Startup SmartThings:
NDTV

Samsung is reportedly considering an acquisition of SmartThings, a home automation startup based in Washington.
TechCrunch, citing sources familiar with the matter, reports that the South Korean major is looking to buy SmartThings for $200 million. However, the report also cites another source who claims that the deal is not done yet.
SmartThings is a home automation solution that allows users to connect home devices like lights and door locks to a system controlled by their mobile phone, notes the report. It offers free Android and iOS apps, which when synced with the SmartThings Hub, can control different sensors, locks, light switches, outlets, thermostats, and other smart devices at home. The smart devices (Internet-connected refrigerator, washing machine or even a bulb) can then communicate with the user via the app with more details.

Unfortunately, Samsung and SmartThings are yet to confirm any such deal. The move clearly hints that Samsung is in no mood to be left behind with the rush to bring Internet-connected gadgets and home appliances that all can communicate with each other and the user. The company had unveiled its own Smart Home ecosystem ahead of CES 2014, and further showcased it at the event.
Google is already on the Internet for Things (or connected devices) path, with its acquisition of smartthermostat startup Nest in a deal valued at $3.2 billion in January. The smart thermostat lets users control more than just the temperature, and Google is using it as a way to enter the home ecosystem.
Apple recently announced its HomeKit ecosystem for home appliances. The company defines it as a new framework for communicating with and controlling connected devices in a user's home. HomeKit would let iPhones or iPads be used as a centralised control for Internet-linked gadgets such as door locks, lights, thermostats and security systems.
