These Are The Best Cheap Smartphones You Can Buy

These Are The Best Cheap Smartphones You Can Buy

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a decent phone. There are plenty of options out there for people who want to save a little cash but still need a phone that's fast, can connect to the internet, and looks nice, too.
Here's a look at some of the cheapest phones worth buying.

Motorola's Moto G is one of the best budget phones you can buy.

It's hard to find a phone cheaper than the Moto G. Motorola's second-generation model starts at $179, comes with a clean version of Android, and runs pretty smoothly, even though it's powered by components that are older than those in today's more expensive phones, according to reviews from CNET and Engadget.
In short, it's a nice, compact phone with easy-to-use software that won't cost you more than $200. You can also get the 4G model for $219.

If you want something that costs even less, try the Moto E.

The Moto E is even cheaper than the Moto G at $129 without any carrier subsidies. If you can get by with a basic phone and mostly care about using Android apps, the Moto E is a good choice.
In my review, I found its camera and lack of 4G to be the biggest weak points, but it's exactly what you would expect for a phone so cheap.

Google's Nexus 5 is a sharp, thin, and fast Android phone that's affordable.

The Nexus 5 starts at $349, which is still much cheaper than most popular phones like the Galaxy S5 or iPhone 6, which cost anywhere between $500 and $800 without a carrier contract.
The best benefit from owning a Nexus phone is that you'll always get the most important Android updates before anyone else does. The Nexus 5 is a slim, attractive phone with a soft-touch back, a thin design, and a 1080p screen.
You can only use it on T-Mobile's network, but it's a great choice if you're on a tight budget.

Amazon's Fire Phone comes with some fun apps and is insanely cheap.

You can now buy Amazon's Fire Phone for just $199.99 without a two-year contract, which is ridiculously cheap for a new phone. If you opt for a two-year contract with AT&T, you'll get the phone for just 99 cents — which is basically a giveaway.
The Fire Phone comes with a sharp screen, a 13-megapixel camera, a fast processor, and Amazon's own apps and services. Firefly, for example, gives you information about object around you by scanning it with the phone's camera. There are tons of cameras on the front of the phone which creates a 3D effect for some images. The phone hasn't been selling well, which is a large part of the reason it's so cheap, but it's an excellent value for the price.

The OnePlus One is among the best Android phones you can buy, and it's really cheap.

The OnePlus One comes with many of the same components you'd find in most high-end Android phones, but it costs about half the price. The OnePlus One, which features a roomy 5.5-inch 1080p screen, a fast processor, and a comfortable yet attractive build only costs $300 off contract. It's pretty tough to find, but if you can snag an invite from someone you know who has the phone, it's totally worth your time.

HTC's Desire 816 is a nice-looking phone with a great screen and plenty of power.

The HTC Desire 816 is an attractive phone with a large, crisp screen. It also has boisterous front-facing speakers just like HTC's flagship One phone. You can grab a prepaid version of the phone for as low as $200 on Amazon.

Apple's iPhone 5C is basically free if you sign up for a two-year contract.

If you're OK with keeping Apple's previous generation iPhone for two years, you can get it for free through AT&T and Verizon. Off contract, it still costs about $450, which is about $100 cheaper than newer flagship phones. The iPhone 5C comes in multiple colors and features a 4-inch Retina Display. It's not the greatest phone you can buy, but if you're tight on cash and love Apple's iOS ecosystem, it's a worthwhile choice.

The iPhone 5S is relatively cheap on a two-year contract, too.

You can get the iPhone 5S for $99.99 on a two-year contract. It's not Apple's newest phone, but it still comes with a gorgeous design, fast processor, excellent camera, and Touch ID fingerprint sensor. If you don't care about having the newest Apple product but want an iPhone, you should consider the iPhone 5S.

The Lumia 830 is a cheap Windows phone with an impressive camera.

As is the case with most Lumia phones, one of the 830's selling points is its camera. It comes with a 10-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, and only costs $99 on a two-year contract. AT&T also bundles a free Fitbit with the phone, which is a great value. Off-contract, the phone costs about $400.

Firefox Could Soon Come To iOS

Firefox Could Soon Come To iOS

Frederic Lardinois
TechCrunch
For a year now, Mozilla has categorically stated that it wouldn’t release a version of Firefox for iOS because Apple won’t let it use its own web engine on its platform. With a new CEO on board, however, it looks like Mozilla’s position may be changing. At an internal Mozilla event in Portland today, the organization talked about the need to get its browser onto iOS.

“We need to be where our users are,” Firefox release manager Lukas Blakk wrote on Twitter today (quoting Mozilla’s VP for Firefox Jonathan Nightingale, we think). “So we’re going to get Firefox on iOS.”

Apple has been very restrictive with regard to third-party browser engines on its platform. Current third-party iOS browsers like Chrome or Opera can only operate on iOS because they use Apple’s own JavaScript and rendering engines, for example — or, as in the case of Opera, by rendering sites on a server and then sending them to the device.

It’s unclear how Mozilla plans to bring Firefox to iOS, but given that Apple isn’t likely to open up its platform for third-party browser engines, it’ll likely have to work with Apple’s technology. With that, it can still support Firefox accounts, its bookmark-syncing tools and all the other features that Firefox for Android currently offers.

Next year is going to be an important one for Firefox — and one that will hopefully bring a bit of a resurgence for the browser. Users today want to use the same browser on all of their devices. That makes keeping bookmarks and passwords in sync quite a bit easier, after all. For a while, Mozilla offered Firefox Home on iOS for exactly this reason, but then it abandoned that project two years ago.

We have reached out to Mozilla for comment and will update this post once we hear more.

Hong Kong police back in Mong Kok clash with protesters for 2nd day

Hong Kong police back in Mong Kok clash with protesters for 2nd day

HONG KONG — For the second day in a row, police on Wednesday clashed with protesters as work
crews began dismantling barricades on a main road in Hong Kong's scruffy Mong Kok district.

The crews set to work at about 9 a.m. on a large encampment under a court order to unblock the streets, which have been obstructed by pro-democracy demonstrators for nearly two months. Police in riot gear came behind them, pushing aside protesters who resisted or questioned the legality of removing people's possession from the encampment.

The move on the Nathan Road protest site was far larger than the operation police had attempted the previous day on Argyle Street when they used pepper spray to try to dislodge protesters, only to see their tough tactics trigger hundreds more to rally to the demonstrator's cause and take to the streets.

Roughly 7,000 police took part in Tuesday's operation, at least nine of whom were injured. Police said more than 80 people were arrested, including a man who was carrying an axe, iron hammer and crowbar.

Police appealed for students not to come to Mong Kok and join the street occupations. "They should not mix with the radicals and troublemakers and be incited or used by others to commit any illegal acts," the police said in a statement.

Tuesday's confrontations were broadcast live in Hong Kong on the 58th day of the city's unprecedented protests, and the resistance seen Wednesday was unsurprising. Several hard-core occupiers said they were ready for whatever happens, even if they get injured or end up in jail.

"I am ready to be arrested," said James Cheng, 22, who has been camping on a Mong Kok street for the last month. "Everyone who comes out here accepts that. If you don't, you shouldn't be here."

Tuesday's street clearing, announced in advance, started out relatively peacefully on a lone block in Mong Kok, a densely populated, blue-collar neighborhood miles from the core protests in downtown Hong Kong.

Court bailiffs, acting on a court order sought by a bus company, instructed crews in white helmets to remove barricades blocking Argyle Street. Protesters, while shouting slogans, did not obstruct them. Police looked on.

As the afternoon wore on, the atmosphere became more and more tense. Black-clad protesters sat down in the street, while blue-clad counter-protesters yelled at them from the crowded sidewalks. Two student leaders stood on a platform of pallets and demanded the bailiffs explain why so many police were there.

Police soon got directly involved, slamming protesters to the ground and carrying them and others away.

Police reopened Argyle Street to traffic by 4 p.m. But in doing so, they pushed protesters in front of the lavish Langham Place mall, frequented each day by thousands of tourists, mostly from mainland China. That resulted in a surreal scene of Chinese shoppers taking photos of pro-democracy protesters confronting police, while they stood safely behind glass windows of the mall listening to "Jingle Bells" and other Christmas Muzak.

Soon after, police — many dressed in riot gear — unfurled familiar banners that read, "Stop charging, or we use force." Less familiar was the weapon they then deployed — a hand-pumped water blaster filled with stinging liquid. It was not immediately known what was in the liquid, but doused protesters said it felt like diluted pepper spray. "Tear water" was how they described it.

Images of the pepper-spray blasters went viral, leading to calls by student groups for help.

"More support urgently needed in Mong Kok," read a message sent out on Twitter by the Hong Kong Federation of Students. "Bring helmets, goggles, shields, umbrellas, towels & be careful!"

By 10 p.m., protesters on Nathan Road could be seen building up their barricades, ready for the clearing operation that began Wednesday morning. A McClatchy reporter saw numerous protesters injured and carried away by paramedics and protesters, but numbers were not immediately available.

Albert Chan, a legislator and a pro-democracy leader who was in the middle of the scrum, said he thought bailiffs and police did a good job on Argyle Street — until midafternoon. "Unfortunately, a few police officers were uncontrollable," he said, and after that, the situation deteriorated.

Chan said it could take days for authorities to safely carry out the court's orders and clear a much larger number of tents and protesters occupying nearby Nathan Road.

For nearly two months, students and other Hong Kong residents have occupied streets in three separate parts of Hong Kong. They are pushing back against Beijing's control of their election process, including selection of a chief executive in 2017.

Initially, the street occupations drew tens of thousands of supporters and drew international attention. But the momentum has waned partly because of splits among the protesters and frustration from Hong Kong businesses and residents over how long the protests have dragged on.

As Tuesday's events revealed, China and Hong Kong authorities also are struggling with tactics. Beijing clearly doesn't want to unleash the kind of force that would draw comparisons with the crackdown on young protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Yet the longer the protests continue, the more the chance they will draw sympathizers and trigger dissent on the mainland.

In a news conference with President Barack Obama earlier this month in Beijing, China's President Xi Jinping forcefully denounced what he called the "illegal" Hong Kong protests, using the same language as the semi-autonomous region's embattled chief executive, C.Y. Leung, also known as Leung Chun-ying.

In the last two weeks, China has also blocked student leaders and other Hong Kong residents videotaped at the protests from entering the mainland. On Tuesday, Hong Kong and British news outlets revealed that China had denied a visa to a Conservative member of the British Parliament, Peter Mandelson, because he'd led a debate on the Hong Kong protests.

The visa denial prompted a group of British parliamentarians this week to cancel a planned three-day visit to Shanghai that was to start Tuesday. It also drew a response from Britain's Foreign Office, according to the Guardian news site.

"The UK-China Leadership Forum has an important role in UK/China relations," said the Foreign Office. "We have raised this with the Chinese government and sought an explanation of their decision to deny a visa."

Ironically, the visa denial comes as Hong Kong protesters are unleashing their frustrations on Great Britain, which turned Hong Kong over to China in 1997. In recent days, several dozen protesters have rallied outside the British consulate here. They argue that the United Kingdom hasn't pressed Beijing enough to honor a 1984 agreement that promised Hong Kong "a high degree of autonomy."

Toysburg Lets You Turn Little Girls Into Nasty Old Pirates

Toysburg Lets You Turn Little Girls Into Nasty Old Pirates

Kids these days don’t know anything about imagination. At least that’s what Angry Mob Games (Muffin Knight, AVP: Evolution) seems to think. Their upcoming free-to-play game, Toysburg, has players designing toys to enlighten children to the magic of the imagination. Seems a little ironic that they are doing this through a video game. But maybe that’s the point

Angry Mob Games describes Toysburg as a mix of “classic quest adventure games and sandbox simulation games”, wherein players travel around a town and complete the problems brought to their attention by the town’s youth. For example, in the gameplay trailer a little girl tells the player, “I’ve never even seen a toy before,” before demanding to be given a toy. The player, undoubtedly perturbed by the greedy, albeit unfortunate, little girl, decides to give her a pirate doll which promptly turns her into a nasty-old pirate.
She had it coming to her.

However, the girl seems happy with her new look and hobbles off down the road, but not before paying the player with coins and candy. It is then revealed that players will have a large amount of toys that they can distribute to the town’s kids. From pirates to cows to a three-headed bear, every toy trope is prominently featured in Toysburg.
Players are also able to create and share their own toy creations with their friends. I personally can’t wait to patch together an angry-looking leprechaun dressed in a tutu and give him the unwieldy wings of a pterodactyl for arms.

Look for Toysburg in January for both Android and iOS devices.

BlackBerry courts iPhone users with cash

BlackBerry courts iPhone users with cash

Agence France-Presse (AFP)

Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry is wooing Apple customers with a cash offer for trade-ins of iPhones for its new square-screened, keyboard-equipped Passport.
The promotion was announced late Monday and will be available starting next month until February 13, in Canada and the United States.
Customers who trade in their iPhones could receive up to $400 cash back depending on the model and condition of their trade-in, plus a $150 gift card.

This marks the first time that BlackBerry has gone head-to-head with Apple since the Canadian firm launched a turnaround plan last year aimed at stemming massive losses.
The Passport was launched in September.
Named for its approximate size to the travel document, the phone was designed to win back key corporate users after BlackBerry was effectively knocked out of the highly competitive consumer smartphone market dominated by Apple and Samsung.
Investors seemed pleased, pushing up the Waterloo, Ontario-based company's share price slightly in morning trading.

But analysts were more skeptical. Carl Simard of Medici called it a very "desperate move."
In September, BlackBerry reported it narrowed its loss in the latest quarter, and expressed optimism that its major restructuring and new business-friendly devices would help fuel a turnaround.
For the three months ended August 30, BlackBerry posted a loss of $207 million on $916 billion in revenues largely split between sales of services and software and more than two million smartphones.
The Canadian manufacturer pioneered the smartphone market but has struggled to keep up with competitors in recent years.

Last year, the company introduced the BlackBerry 10 operating system and new smartphones in an effort to regain ground lost to rivals such as Apple and others using the Google Android operating system.

Top 10 Lies People Tell

Top 10 Lies People Tell

10) Your Table Will Be Ready in 5 Minutes
Many of us have heard this before, and it’s almost always a lie. You walk into the restaurant and see the line, the never-ending line of guests waiting for a table, before you decided to turn around and march out the door, you decide to take a chance and ask how long the wait will be. The host or hostess then asks for the number of guests in your party, then he or she checks the seating chart and lo and behold it’s only a 5 minute wait! They’re lying. They’re lying for a good reason, well in their eye, they just want to keep your business, and the idea behind it is that keeping you waiting for that never occurring 5 minutes is better than telling you it’s gonna be an hour and having you turn away. On the lying scale we give this one about a 1/5 because it can be awfully annoying but ultimately when it does happen, you know it’s a lie.

9) I Never Got That Message
We’ve all either said this or heard this, and it is almost always a lie. You know when you tell it, cause most of the time it’s used in avoidance of confrontation; you get a call and you decide to ignore it, than your voice mail beeps. It’s your wife/husband/mother/father/brother/sister/grandmother/grandfather/son/daughter or any other person who you were too busy to talk to at the moment with a problem that needs your immediate attention, and after listening to it you either decide to ignore or accidentally forget it. Then the call comes again but this time you can’t avoid it, “Did you get my message?” says the person on the phone and even though your brain is saying, “tell the truth, it’ll save the time they need to explain the thing you’ve already heard, “your lips say, “I never got your message.” So now you have to hear what you’ve already listened to and still try to avoid whatever confrontation they may be starting.

8) It’ll Be Okay
The Phrase, “It’ll Be Okay,” often can mean that it’ll be okay, but more often than not it’s a friendly way to comfort someone. Sometimes it’s an over-reaction, sometimes it’s something that is just unfair to the other person, but more often than not it’s a way to make them shut up. “Oh no! My sweater shrunk!,” to which you respond, “It’ll be okay.” AKA Why would I care about your sweater, shut up and leave me alone, or maybe that’s just me….

7) I’m FineWhether it be from your wife, husband, father, mother, sister or brother, we’ve all heard this before. You come home from work to a somewhat distant person and upon asking the question what’s wrong, the answer comes quickly and short-tempered, “nothing’s wrong.” Upon further interrogation we ask the inevitable question, “Are You Mad,” to which the answer always remains, “I’m Fine.” Yet it’s said in the most anger filled voice humanly Possible. Your only solution now is to figure out what the hell you did wrong without asking. Asking will only make it worse.

6) I Never Said That
We hear this a lot, especially when in debate with another person. They’ll say something that just gets your blood running hot, and later you’ll say, “You really shouldn’t have said that,” to which they’ll reply, ” I never said that!” You know they did, and deep down they know they did to, but I guess it’s easier to pretend you weren’t that gigantic jerk earlier, it’s easier to pretend you forgot. Except….we know.

5) It’s Not the Money, It’s the Principal (pun intended)
This is why I never borrow money, we hear this all the time when money is involved in some way shape or form with lending. Even for the smallest amount of money, when it comes down to it the person will always want to be paid back, and then the inevitable arguments erupts, you accuse them of being a money driven scoundrel they accuse you of being a mooch. “It’s not the money, It’s the point,” they’ll say, but we all know you just want your money back, and you should, it’s your money!

3) I Never Lie
The irony of this statement is that the very defense of the question will only prove further that the statement is a lie, that is to say, there is no one in the world that has not told a lie. Whether it be simply telling your pregnant wife that she doesn’t look fat, or telling your son who just started playing guitar that he sounds amazing, everybody lies. The trick is not to lie maliciously or for the purpose of hurting someone, but rather to help someone on whatever level that may be.
2) I’m Sick
We’ve heard this more times than we can count, “I’m Sick, I can’t go to school/work/the gym.” And sometimes it’s true, but most of the time let’s face it, it’s not, it’s just a much easier way of not having to do whatever it is they want you to do.
1) I Have Read & Agreed to the Above Terms and ConditionsI find it hard to believe that anybody that has agreed to this has actually read the 13 page long terms that the program or contract states. I don’t even know if the people who wrote it had read it. Definitely not the people who work at the company, my guess is it was written up by the legal team at Burke, Dunn & Hare of New York Legal Department and they sent it over to Apple so that their asses are covered.
